Even some of the craziest of health fads have those who follow them religiously which makes us wonder if they could actually be as beneficial as they say. If you’re someone who’s been battling the weight-loss monster your whole life, you’ve probably tried a number of different diets. The raw diet isn’t just a fad that has come and gone, its actually somewhat of a lifestyle choice for people who are committed and dedicated to their health. Here’s a breakdown of the raw food diet so you can decide if its right for you or not.

The theory behind the raw food diet is that food in its natural a raw form is packed with nutrients and enzymes that help the body reach optimal health. Consuming raw foods for the majority of your diet can improve your overall wellness as well as lose weight if you wish. Eating a diet of raw foods dates back to experiments done since the 1800′s of the effects of raw items on human health. Since then, the diet has evolved to where it includes foods that haven’t been processed, cooked, genetically engineered or exposed to pesticides. This diet includes eating fresh fruits, berries, vegetables, seeds nuts and herbs in their whole and naturally occurring state.

Typically, 75-80% of what you consume each day should be plant-based while on the raw food diet and although it can be heated, the temperature should never be above 115 degrees Fahrenheit. The reasoning behind this idea is that cooking food can diminish its nutritional value and the health benefits it can have for your body. For example, certain vitamins like Vitamin C and folate are destroyed by heat, as well as different compounds, like the Cancer-fighting ones in broccoli can be greatly reduced when cooked. Cooking whole, natural foods can also sometimes promote the formation of potentially harmful compounds in food during high-heat cooking.

The best part about the raw food diet is that you can tailor and shape it to fit your needs because the only guideline is that raw foods should make up 70 percent or more of what you eat. Most people on the raw food diet are vegan and some consume raw animal products like sashimi, ceviche or carpaccio as well as raw milk or cheese made with raw milk. Some stick strictly to the only-raw form of foods while others include cooked foods in moderation.

So, should you try it?- If you like the taste of foods in their natural, uncooked state and you’re looking for an incredibly healthy diet to try, you may like what the raw food diet does for your body and for your health. The nutritional benefits of a raw diet will be hard to deny, so if you believe you can maintain eating raw foods for 70 percent of your daily intake, go for it!
